Sears Canada is cutting about 400 jobs across the country, most in Ontario, according to several news reports.

A spokesman confirmed all but two in-store cafes in Canada — the ones at the Eaton Centre in Toronto and Vancouver’s Pacific Centre — will close as part of Sears Canada’s plan to focus on products and services.

Apart from the food service workers, the company has also laid off some support and head office staff, but none working in customer service, The Canadian Press said.

The cuts come after Sears Canada cut 70 head office jobs last November, after announcing a $46.6-million loss in the third quarter.

In the United States, owner Sears Holdings Inc. said last month it would close as many as 120 Sears and Kmart stores.

"We are not pleased with our results this quarter and have significant work ahead of us,” CEO Calvin McDonald said at the time. “The Sears Canada leadership team … is committed to making major improvements and has begun to implement new initiatives that are intended to lead the company to reach its full potential."

Earlier this month, Bell Canada cut about 500 call centre workers.

And nearly 300 Garda security screeners at Pearson International Airport will be laid off or have their hours reduced Wednesday.

Sears Canada has roughly 30,000 employees across Canada and about 120 stores.
