Imams issue fatwa against honour killings in wake of Shafia murder trial
02/04/2012 | The Canadian Press

Imams across Canada and the U.S. have issued a moral ruling condemning honour killings, domestic violence and misogyny as "un-Islamic."
The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada says the fatwa aims to clarify any possible confusion over the teachings of the Qur'an.
The ruling comes after a verdict was delivered in the Shafia murder trial, in which a Montreal couple and their son were convicted of killing four female relatives.
The Crown alleged the three Shafia sisters and their father's first wife in a polygamous marriage were killed in an effort to restore the family's honour.
The trial captured worldwide attention and cast a shadow over Canada's Islamic community, prompting many to speak out against domestic violence.
Syed Soharwardy, a Calgary-based imam who founded the council, says religious leaders are taking a stronger stand in issuing a fatwa, which is "morally binding" for Muslims.
