A 15-year-old boy has died in hospital after collapsing during a hockey game in Carp, Ont.

Ottawa police say the boy collapsed Sunday evening during a game at the Erskine Johnson Arena in the community west of Ottawa.

"He had been playing hockey, he had returned to the bench after his shift, and it was noticed that he had collapsed," said Staff Sgt Pat McCaffery.

"The trainer and others started to provide CPR and other treatment, including using a portable defibrillator."

The teenager was rushed to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and was pronounced dead early Monday.

McCaffery says the boy’s family was with him in the hospital and could not say if the young player had regained consciousness.

Police earlier said no foul play was suspected and the teenager did not suffer an injury during the game.

McCaffery says the boy’s name is not being released at the request of the family.
