An Ottawa-area preteen girl is the latest casualty of the H1N1 virus.

The child, who has not yet been identified due to patient confidentiality, did not have a known pre-existing medical condition.

She died in hospital on Saturday, the first victim of the second stage of the pandemic.

Now, officials are concerned the disease may have spread. Health care workers are monitoring her parents and siblings. So far, they have shown no traces of the disease.

In its first stage, there were a total of 38 H1N1-related deaths in Ontario.
