To say Canadians are a generous lot would be an understatement.
Since a devastating earthquake hit Haiti on January 12, we’ve doled out nearly $25 million in aid from our own wallets.
The Red Cross has collected $22.2 million to help survivors, and $30,000 of that came from CityNews viewers. Kevin Frankish hosted the Help for Haiti special on Sunday evening, with an update on the latest conditions in Port-au-Prince.
The Humanitarian Coalition - an umbrella organization of disaster relief organizations including Care Canada, Oxfam and Save the Children – has collected an addition $2.5 million in disaster relief aid from Canadians.
A group of Toronto school children is also doing their part.
"I feel very sad for them," described Grade 8 student Joshua.
"I think about crying when I imagine losing my home, having it come down on you," he added.
Schools across the city held a moment of silence to remember the victims.
Hospitals are overwhelmed by masses of injured people injured in the deadly earthquake, and food is scarce.
The United Nations estimates some 84,000 people were left homeless there by the earthquake, which also destroyed the road to Port-au-Prince.
The Red Cross is still looking to collect more donations. Volunteers will be at five TTC stations all week long, appealing to commuters during the morning and afternoon rush. You can donate at the following stations:
- King
- Bloor/Yonge
- Sheppard-Yonge
- Finch
