A problem with sticking gas pedals has prompted Toyota to recall more than 2.3 million vehicles on both sides of the border.
The company said in rare cases the mechanism wears down, making the accelerator harder to press or come back up and, in some cases, stuck.
This move is separate from the ongoing recall of about 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles whose pedals had been known to get stuck under floor mats, causing several crashes – one of which killed four people in San Diego.
The
most recent recall includes the following vehicles:
- 2009-2010 RAV4
- 2009-2010 Corolla
- 2009-2010 Matrix
- 2005-2010 Avalon
- 2007-2010 Camry
- 2010 Highlander
- 2007-2010 Tundra
- 2008-2010 Sequoia
Toyota recommends drivers of the recalled vehicles firmly press on – not pump – their brakes if the gas pedal becomes stuck and call their nearest Toyota dealer.
It also recommends Toyota Venza owners in Canada take out any Toyota-brand drivers'-side all-weather floor mats. Its carpeted floor mats are safe if properly installed and secured.
