The latest meat recall due to concerns over listeria contamination has prompted a proposed class action.

Merchant Law Group says it is suing Siena Foods Ltd. on behalf of anyone who bought or ate the meat in question.

The law firm says Siena was "negligent" in producing contaminated meat.

The suit is looking for financial compensation, regardless of whether illness results.

The company has not commented on the lawsuit, but has said some of its meats tested positive for listeria.

The Ontario government is investigating whether any deaths can be linked to the contamination.

Siena has recalled all affected products, including its cooked ham, which may have been distributed nationally.

Symptoms of listeriosis include a high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.

Pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

In 2008, 22 Canadians died from listeriosis-contaminated meat produced by Maple Leaf.
