Gord Martineau
Anchor, CityNews
As a CityNews Anchor for over three decades, Gord Martineau has been providing viewers the latest in local news that matters to them weeknights on Citytv.
Born and raised in Montreal, Gord started a career in radio straight out of high school. He worked at a Halifax radio station for two and a half years then moved to the news department at Montreal's top Anglo radio station CJAD. Developing an interest in television, he did a short stint at CJCH-TV in Halifax before becoming the weekend anchor at CFCF-TV, Montreal's No. 1 English News and Entertainment Station. Since joining Citytv in 1977, Gord has earned his reputation as one of Toronto's favourite anchors.
Along with winning numerous prestigious awards for broadcasting – including a Gemini Award for Canada's best News Anchor – Gord was honoured with the 2008 Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television Humanitarian Award for his tireless work with numerous charitable organizations.
Throughout his career Gord has lent his support to a variety of charities such as the Kids Help Phone; Reena Foundation; Kidney Foundation of Canada; Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation; Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Doug Philpott Inner City Tennis Program. In 2009, he set up the Gord Martineau Foundation to offer assistance to local organizations such as the Kids Breakfast Club, the Second Chance Scholarship Fund, Global Medic, as well as the Siem Reap Childrens Hospital in Cambodia.
Perhaps the closest charity to Gord’s heart is the Herbie Found, which he has supported for the past decade.
Each year, Gord produces touching and insightful news serials on Herbie patients facing life threatening medical conditions that cannot be addressed in their home countries. Without the Herbie Fund/ Hospital For Sick Children partnership, which is supported by generous donations from the public, these children will not receive the help they need to thrive. The dedication that goes into saving these children is a message to the world that Canadians are a generous and compassionate people who believe in giving children the best chance in life.
