It's big, it's bold, but is it another mistake by the lake?
The ghost of Exhibition Stadium lives on at BMO Field, which Toronto FC, the city's newest major league soccer franchise, will call home this season.
The new arena was previewed on Monday and it will quickly make you forget the old X'd-out Ex.
The first thing you'll notice is the large white maple leaf pattern formed in the sea of red seats. Not that the team expects those chairs to be empty enough for you to see it.
But it's the playing surface that really garners attention in the $63 million structure.
"There's only a little bit of fabric here," demonstrates BMO Field G.M. Marc Petitpas. "Sits an inch and three quarters of what they call in-fill and the in-fill is a combination of cryogenic rubber and silica sand. Really cushiony, reacts well to the foot like a natural playing surface and doesn't irritate the players' skins when they're slide tackling."
But what about the winds that used to plague the old CNE Stadium?
"I ain't worried about it at all," smiles coach Mo Johnstone. "You can play soccer in any conditions. Obviously I'm from Scotland and the conditions over there are bad."
Fans will get their first good look at the place in less than two weeks, when FC plays its first home game against the Kansas City Wizards on April 28th.
Let's hope the only wind is the one in the home team's sails.
