Colts and Bears To Meet In Super Bowl XLI

Thousands of fans likely wondered what the odds of Dan Klecko scoring a touchdown were when the Indianapolis Colts' 280-pound defensive tackle plunged into the endzone during the AFC championship game.

And with the Super Bowl just two days away, any who think they now hold the answer are free to actually place a wager on the likelihood of it happening again.

The odds of Klecko scoring the big game's first touchdown are 50-1, and that strange and improbable outcome is just one of hundreds offered by Las Vegas bookmakers.

Money can ride on just about everything, including which team calls the first timeout, who wins the coin toss, and the direction of the first missed field goal. For the record, wide left is favoured.

Thanks to the endless stream of exotic propositions, experts predict Super Bowl wagering will top $100 million for the first time. And that's just counting the legal variety.

But the passion for pursuing payouts comes as no surprise to the Colts electrifying receiver Reggie Wayne.

"Every year I go to Vegas, and I've seen a lot of stuff being bet on," he said. "It's kind of cool to sit back and see people finding other ways to make fun out of the game.

"They'll probably bet on who has the first fumble. I don't want any part of that bet."

One he would like some part of is the first touchdown. Wayne is a 6-to-1 favourite to be the first in an end zone with the pigskin.

Colts tight end Dallas Clark won't be betting, but if he did, he agreed Wayne's the guy to take.

"I would probably bet on Reggie before I would bet on Klecko," said Clark, who added gambling is common in all walks of life, including his.

"On this team we have some guys who will bet on which bird will fly off a post first. I'm not going to mention any names."

Maybe Clark won't, but the lines certainly do.

Among the myriad individual performances that have wagers attached are total points by Bears kicker Robbie Gould, rushing attempts by Colts back Joseph Addai and even whether Chicago quarterback Rex Grossman throws an interception in the first half.

But nevermind the first half, or for that matter the coin toss. Those that can't wait to start risking their money can wager on the length of Billy Joel's rendition of the national anthem.

The over-under is one minute 44 seconds.

"You have everybody betting in Vegas on who's going to tie their shoe first," Gould said. "It's really crazy as far as what people will bet on. It's fun. If they enjoy it and can make a little extra money, more power to them."

There are even bets linking the Super Bowl to other sporting events. Vegas will take wagers on whether Tiger Woods' fourth-round score Sunday at Dubai is higher than Chicago wideout Bernard Berrian's receiving yardage total.

So with all those options, from trap bets to the simply ludicrous, which is the safest play?

There's no such thing, but Bears rookie Devin Hester, who set an NFL record with six touchdown returns, might receive the opening kickoff making him a good choice to score first at 30 to 1.

"If I get a chance to get my hands on the ball, I could go the distance," Hester said.
