Trouble is brewing in Hamilton where Steeltown’s football team is at odds with city council about the location of a new stadium.
A Hamilton City Council decision Tuesday to build a new stadium for the 2015 Pan-Am games at a downtown site puts the future of the CFL in Steeltown in question.
Local politicians overwhelmingly voted in favour of constructing the new sports complex in the West Harbour area. Robert Young, the owner of the Tiger-Cats, (pictured) strongly opposes that site as the replacement for the aging Ivor Wynne stadium. He wants the new complex erected at the East Mountain and has withdrawn from all West Harbour negotiations and has pulled back $15 million in support.
"It is painfully apparent, despite the best efforts of our facilitator, Michael Fenn, the plethora of information from stadium experts, and our own financial submissions, that you remain fixated on the West Harbour Stadium and without a strong political champion in Hamilton, it is impossible to continue our efforts with respect to the East Mountain proposal," Young wrote in a letter to Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger.
And now there are rumours floating around the Ti-Cats may move to Quebec City. Halifax has also been mentioned as a possibility.
Without the Ti-Cats, the West Harbour stadium will have no permanent tenant. The city of Hamilton must convince the Pan-Am Host Corporation they have a plan for the future of the complex.
