Ontario’s opposition is calling on the province to fire the Minister of Community Safety following a probe into the G20.
The province’s ombudsman Andre Marin said Tuesday the martial law enacted during the summit resulted in mass rights violations.
The illegal regulation, he said, falsely gave police the right to detain and search people on June 26 and 27.
The Progressive Conservatives are now demanding Premier Dalton McGuinty fire then-minister Rick Bartolucci. The NDP, meanwhile, say McGuinty should apologize to the people at the summit and then call a public inquiry.
Bartolucci was replaced by Jim Bradley on August 18, 2010.
The violation of civil rights was unprecedented in Canada, Marin said. The public, he added, were deliberately misinformed.
Marin said he was "bewildered" when Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair referred to a five-metre rule, which did not exist. Blair refused to co-operate with the ombudsman's investigation and also declined to have his officers answer Marin's questions.
