A wireless security measure could mean you have a cellphone conversation cut short during the G8 and G20 summits later this month.

The government has informed cellphone networks their signals may be jammed to create an area of electronic silence surrounding motorcades. The technology will only be used around the processions moving leaders to and from events in cottage country during the G8 and in downtown Toronto during the G20.

The government reportedly hasn’t told wireless companies specifically how the jamming could affect their customers, but the security tool is only expected to result in a few lost calls.

No one will be informed of when and where the jamming technology will be used.

Jammers have been used before at major events, including the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games. The RCMP is required to apply for an exemption from the Radiocommunication Act in order to use the technology.

The RCMP recently received an exemption to block signals during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit last month.

Meanwhile, the three metre-high security fencing has been going up all over the downtown core, including a special perimeter around the Westin Harbour Castle, where the delegates will be staying.

Airspace will also be tightly restricted the weekend of July 26 – 27. Flight training schools, air taxis, sightseeing and pleasure flights won’t be allowed within 15 nautical miles of the summit site. In fact, you won’t even be able to fly a kite, hang-glide or fly a remote-controlled plane.
