Environment Canada issued a wind warning for Toronto and other parts of the GTA, including Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga and Brampton, late Friday afternoon.

Gusts up to 100 kilometres an hour are possible, the federal agency warned, and winds ranging from 60 kilometres an hour to 90 kilometres an hour are expected.

The strongest winds will happen overnight into Saturday morning, CityNews weather specialist Sangita Patel said Friday.

It should be an interesting weekend, weather-wise, with the possibility of heavy rain, snow and high winds in the city and across the southwestern part of the province.

Earlier in the day, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for a large swath of southwestern Ontario, including Toronto, York, Durham, Peel, Halton and Hamilton, warning of the possibility high winds, rain and snow.

The statement covers an area stretching from Windsor up to Algonquin and east to Ottawa.

“A low pressure system from Colorado is forecast to strengthen significantly as it tracks toward and across Southern Ontario over the next 36 hours,” the statement says. “This weather system will bring a variety of significant weather to Southern Ontario [Friday] and Saturday.”

Isolated thunderstorms and heavy rain are possible across southwestern Ontario late Friday afternoon and evening.

“That will happen [in Toronto] after 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. this evening. At times the rain will be heavy,” Breakfast Television Weather Specialist Frank Ferragine said.

Strong winds with gusts up to 80 km/h are also expected to kick up Friday night into Saturday morning.

“By the time we get into the early morning Saturday the cooler air pushes its way through and with that we’ll see the winds very strong as well the development of some snowfall — and through the overnight period some very icy road conditions.”

A wind warning is in effect for the Niagara Falls and Welland area.
