Dr. Karl Kabasele joined the Citytv news team in July of 2004 and is responsible for filing medical stories and providing medical commentary for "CityNews" and CP24. He also fills in occasionally as host for the Health Edition of "TalkTV" on CP24. In addition to being "CityNews"' Medical Specialist, Dr, Karl works in Addiction Medicine at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto.
A former Associate Medical Officer of Health for the Public Health department for the City of Toronto, Dr. Karl was lead physician for Toronto's West Nile Virus program and worked on a variety of health issues, including the control of the SARS outbreak in 2003.
An active member in the community, Dr. Karl is a volunteer on the Board of Directors for the Lawrence Heights Community Health Centre. He tutors middle school students at the Jamaican Canadian Association and volunteers his time in the communications department at his local church. A social activist, Dr. Karl went to Grenada to help out after Hurricane Ivan in 2004, and travelled to Sri Lanka to assist after the tsunami 2005 disaster. He also went on capacity-building missions to Cambodia and Honduras in 2005.
Dr. Karl enjoys travel and the arts, especially music and film. A fan of political biographies, he loves to keep active by running, rollerblading and recreational sports (he is a VERY amateur golfer!) and is a fierce competitor of "Trivial Pursuit".
EDUCATION:
Dr. Karl went to medical school at McGill University and did his residency in Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. He holds a Master's degree in Public Health from Harvard University.
