A journalist since 1974, Peter Silverman started his career at Global Television as a reporter covering a variety of beats including, labour disputes, Queen's Park matters, military concerns and terrorism. He was also the host writer for "Code 10-78", a half-hour reconstruction of unsolved crimes. Peter also acted as a freelance print journalist covering a variety of subjects ranging from policing, terrorism, labour, military, strategic affairs and social policy issues.
In 1981, Peter left Global to join the "CityPulse" business segment "CityBiz" and became "Silverman Helps" Ombudsman in 1989. He is the author of Who Speaks for the Children? commemorating the International Year of the Child and wrote Voices of a Lost Generation, focusing on child welfare. Peter was also editor of Angola Story of a Revolt and one time editor of The Institute of the Journal Race, London England.
Peter was/is; Captain in the British Para Engineers ('57-'62) serving in Middle and Far East; member of the British Airborne Forces Association; Chairperson for the Canadian Organization for Rainforest Conservation and Tropical Education; Advisory Board Member for the Canadian Juno D-Day Project, Fund raising committe for the Canadian War Musium and Spokesperson for the Jewish War Veterans Memorial project''-- and one time Chairperson for Aphasia Centre. Peter volunteers to work in third world countries on projects ranging from rewiring a hospital to building bridges in Central America, the Caribbean and Africa. Peter has been everything from an advertising executive, construction foreman to entrepreneur and university lecturer.
"Silverman Helps" has garnered two Edward R. Murrow Awards, recognized for 'Best Feature' and 'Best Investigative' program. Competing against CNN, CBC, CTV, Fox and BBC, 2005 saw Peter and his team winning two awards at the New York Festivals. They won the World Gold and Grand Prize for their series Stolen Dreams, while 2006's awards ceremony awarded a World Bronze for the "Silverman Helps" series of stories on Fabry's Disease. Radio Television News Directors Association of Canada (RTNDA) also awarded "Silverman Helps" with the Dan McArthur Award for 'Best In-depth/Investigative Story' (Central Region) for Peter's stories on Fabry's Drug Funding. Peter was also honoured in May 2006 for his effort against fraud at the 12th Annual Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (Toronto Chapter), selected 2006 "Man of the Year" at the Consumers’ Choice Awards' Gala and nominated for his work on "Silverman Helps" at the 2006 Gemini Awards.
