MUMBAI, INDIA -- An Indian news agency says 147 people are feared dead and 439 people are wounded after a series of explosions ripped through commuter trains in Mumbai, India during the Tuesday evening rush hour. The blasts, strong enough to rip doors and windows off train cars, were believed to be part of a well-coordinated attack.
Authorities dug through piles of debris in their search for survivors. Bystanders helped emergency workers carry the battered and bloody victims to ambulances.
A spokesperson for Western Railway said seven blasts had taken place in total. All train service was halted and officials urged the public to stay away from stations across the city.
The first explosion struck a station in the suburb of Khar, and the succeeding blasts occurred shortly thereafter - a tactic often used by Kashmiri militants, though there was no immediate claim of responsibility in the bombings.
Kashmir was divided between India and Pakistan in 1947 after they became independent of Britain, but they fought a full-scale war over it in 1965.
Though the nuclear rivals have made steps toward peace in the past several years, India still accuses Pakistan of funding militants.
