Philip Cabrita

Co-Host, Ethnosonic

He's guaranteed to be the most popular guy at any party, and as one of the most in-demand DJ's currently working the club scene in Vancouver, Philip "Flipout" Cabrita has seen the live end of a lot of parties.

Affectionately known as "Flipout", Philip is considered the quintessential B-boy and the consummate DJ able to rock the house in any style: Hip Hop, R&B, Latin, House, Dancehall, B-boy breaks or Rare Grooves are all available at the drop of a needle. With over 15 years experience mixing live and working the mic, Philip's the host of choice for virtually every live hip hop show that comes through the city and he's mercilessly sought after for his expansive music knowledge and experience.

Although Philip makes his on camera debut as co-host on Ethnosonic - a global music show exploring sounds and videos from the worlds most diverse and vibrant music scenes – his broadcast career actually stretches over the past dozen years with a variety of local radio stations, and a mix of music formats.  Phil currently spends his daylight hours working the turntables at The Beat 94.5 FM.

What world music means:

"I've been exposed to Portuguese FADO (folk music) since birth. I love Bhangra and my first radio experience was co-hosting a show on an Indo-Canadian radio station. I play a lot of Dancehall Reggae... reggae transcends all boundaries and crosses over to all cultures.  My three siblings are all avid and diverse music fans: Iron Maiden, Sting, Radiohead, Aaliyah, Three Tenors...  But, perhaps the following statement could sum it all up, in a nutshell: I like Boney M".

Little known gems:

He's the founding member of one of Canada's leading breakdancing squads, Contents Under Pressure.  He's an active recording and touring artist, and he's bilingual, fluent in English, Portuguese and can get by with Spanish, but most nights he can be found speaking with his hands, spinning the wheels of steel.
