Drive-by Purse Snatchings
August 11 | 9:05p

Winnipeg police are on the hunt for a pair of purse snatchers after a violent attack in a city parking lot Wednesday night.

Shortly after 6:00 p.m., a 57-year-old woman left the mall to head to her car. A white, mid-sized four door car pulled up beside her, and someone in the passenger's seat grabbed her purse.

Patrol Sergeant Kelly Dennison says the woman tried to hold on to her purse as the vehicle drove away, and was dragged before she let go.  She received minor injuries and was treated in hospital.

Police report there was a similar incident last Thursday.  The car was a different colour but police say it happened around the same time, and at the same location.

Garden City Shopping Centre management says it was not aware of the purse snatchings but points out there is security on patrol 24 hours a day.

If you do become a victim, police urge you to give up your purse because your safety is far more valuable.

The suspect driver is descibed as a man in his 20's with brownish hair.  The suspect passenger is believed to be a woman, also in her 20's, with shoulder length brown hair and a large tattoo on her right upper arm.  Part of the Manitoba licence plate of the most recent car used was also seen by witnesses with the letters ECJ.

Keeping Tourism Alive
June 23 | 3:18p

Tourism season has hit Winnipeg once again.

But high gas prices, a strong Canadian dollar, and confusion over border security may keep some Americans at bay.

The Forks is always a tourist hot spot, and with the record-breaking warm spring, the season is off to good start.

The owner of Paddlewheel River Rouge Tours says weather also plays a huge role in his bottom line. Steve Hawchuk doesn't expect much from American tourists this year.

"When the dollar was in their favour, they weren't coming out, so this year, I don't know what's going to happen. We'll know in another week or so but so far they haven't been coming," Hawchuk said.

The ummer tourist season truly begins when school ends next week.  That's when Hawchuk and others relying on tourist dollars can better guage what the season has in store.
