Demonstrating Over Institutionalized Care
September 30 | 11:44p

A couple of hundred joined a peaceful demonstration in Memorial park... Their beef?   A forty million dollar pledge from the province made in December, to refurbish the Manitoba Developmental centre in Portage la Prairie.

Community Living Manitoba's Executive director Dale Kendel says the time has well past for institutionalizing people with disabilities. Kendel asks "Why in 2005 is the prospect of an institution to warehouse people 60 miles away Winnpeg and other communities in Manitoba acceptable?"

The demonstators claim no one from the Doer government took the short walk across the street to Memorial Park. But Opposition parties did.   Both Liberal leader Jon Gerrard and Conservative leader Stuart Murray say if the message here isn't heard by the NDP, they'll bring it to them.  Gerrard says institutions don't make sense financially.

Keeping Tourism Alive
June 23 | 3:18p

Tourism season has hit Winnipeg once again.

But high gas prices, a strong Canadian dollar, and confusion over border security may keep some Americans at bay.

The Forks is always a tourist hot spot, and with the record-breaking warm spring, the season is off to good start.

The owner of Paddlewheel River Rouge Tours says weather also plays a huge role in his bottom line. Steve Hawchuk doesn't expect much from American tourists this year.

"When the dollar was in their favour, they weren't coming out, so this year, I don't know what's going to happen. We'll know in another week or so but so far they haven't been coming," Hawchuk said.

The ummer tourist season truly begins when school ends next week.  That's when Hawchuk and others relying on tourist dollars can better guage what the season has in store.
