Fight Over Hog Plant Heats Up
April 17 | 8:18p

Businesses opposed to a new hog processing facility in St. Boniface are planning to make it an issue when the civic election rolls around.

A group of businesses from the St. Boniface Industrial Park, calling themselves OlyOpp, announced their plans Monday to have the $200 million Oly-West plant site moved outside the city.

The group says the hog processing plant will be a detriment to the area and they will support councillors running against those that voted for the Oly-West project in the first place.  Transcona Councillor Russ Wyatt voted against the hog plant and says the group should be involved in civic politics.

The group says they don't have any candidates in mind to run in the civic election yet.

St, Boniface Councillor Franco Magnifico voted for the Oly-West project.  He says politicians should be held accountable for the decisons they make and says city council is doing what they believe is in the best interest of the city.

Keeping Tourism Alive
June 23 | 3:18p

Tourism season has hit Winnipeg once again.

But high gas prices, a strong Canadian dollar, and confusion over border security may keep some Americans at bay.

The Forks is always a tourist hot spot, and with the record-breaking warm spring, the season is off to good start.

The owner of Paddlewheel River Rouge Tours says weather also plays a huge role in his bottom line. Steve Hawchuk doesn't expect much from American tourists this year.

"When the dollar was in their favour, they weren't coming out, so this year, I don't know what's going to happen. We'll know in another week or so but so far they haven't been coming," Hawchuk said.

The ummer tourist season truly begins when school ends next week.  That's when Hawchuk and others relying on tourist dollars can better guage what the season has in store.
